Sparkling Cantaloupe Agua Fresca

 

Nobody wants to fuss over stuff in these hot sultry summer days. Just give me a glass of something icy cold… fresh and light.  Cantaloupes are just soooo good and good as is. I remember eating with my granddaddy out in the yard, so we could be as messy as we wanted to be. Sometimes we’d shake on some salt… sometimes black pepper… but mostly, just loved biting into those wedges as the juice dripped off our chins.

Cantaloupe lends itself to so many ways to enjoy. You may have made some of my No Churn Cantaloupe & Coconut Ice Cream… if not, do!  This recipe is yet another way to slurp on some of summer’s melon candy.  Do whirl up some of this refreshing water.  It keeps for days in the fridge, but I don’t think it will last too long. Young and old alike will love this… so get that blender out of the back of the cabinet and get to blend’n.  You’ll all be glad you did.

Sparking Cantaloupe Agua Fresca

Who isn’t ready for something cold and bubbly? Cantaloupes are all around to enjoy right now so we offer you something refreshing to sip on the porch… or to put in your cooler for out on the beach.

Ingredients

  • 1 large cantaloupe cut into chunks*
  • 1/2-3/4 cup honey depending on sweetness of melon
  • juice and zest of half an orange
  • juice and zest of half a lime
  • 4 cups water
  • ice
  • carbonated water
  • fresh mint opt.

Instructions

  • Put melon, honey, juices and water into blender and whirl until smooth. Taste and add more honey if needed. Stir in zest. Chill.
  • To serve, combine equal parts of mixture with sparkling water and serve over ice. Garnish with melon cubes and mint.

Notes

*Optional: Cut a bit of melon into cubes for garnish. Or, freeze in large chunks and use as ice cubes.
Variations:
Blend with ice for a cantaloupe slushie.
Freeze in popsicle molds.
Add a bit of ½ and ½ or condensed milk for a creamy drink.
Use as mixer in cocktails.
Did you know?
What’s the difference in carbonated waters… seltzer, club soda, sparkling and tonic waters?
Seltzer: the simplest carbonated water… carbon dioxide (CO2) added to water
Club Soda: water with carbon dioxide added along with minerals; has a mild salty taste (preferred by bartenders)
Sparkling: unlike soda water that is artificially carbonated, sparkling mineral water comes from naturally carbonated sources
Tonic: Tonic water is seltzer water or soda water with the addition of quinine, sugar or other sweetener
